Senior Housing in the Gold Country

Making the decision to move to senior living and finding the right community is more difficult than it might seem. There are so many variables! Well, if you’re like us, and retiring in the Gold Country area of Northern California is on your mind, we’ve done a lot of the research for you.

Here’s our comprehensive overview of senior living facilities located near the I-80 Corridor in the Northern California Gold Country. It’s an inclusive look at communities in Auburn, South Nevada County, and Grass Valley. At the end is a handy chart comparing the main choices in the area by features and price.

Full disclosure: we run a senior living community ourselves. We’re the first ones below, just to get it out of the way. 🙂  But rest assured, the info about the other retirement communities in this guide is carefully researched and as objective as we could make it. We’ve included contact info and links to websites for all communities (when available).

Rincon del Rio (Bend of the River)

We are a proposed multi-level, active living 55+, Agri-hood community offering 300 homes composed of Cottages, Pocket Neighborhoods, apartments, and condominiums. There are 45-units of Assisted Living/Memory Care discretely located in a separate area on-site.

The services are too many to list but include on-site doctor, swimming pools, 160 acres of open space with walking/fitness trails, wildlife/nature, a pond, small downtown, club houses, and sports courts. There are several on-site restaurants, a business center, massage-hair/barber services, transportation, and a consigner.

The community is fee simple (homes privately owned, and sold [including appreciation] with prices set by home owner). Custom-designed homes range from 1,500 sq ft. – 2,500 + sq. ft. with prices starting at around $550,000. All homes have full kitchens in in-suite master bedrooms.

There is a $4,500 monthly charge for membership in the HOA and Rincon del Rio Reserve which includes river frontage, miles of trails, outdoor recreation structures/areas, all maintenance (interior/exterior), access to a consigner doctor, entertainment, services, and an agreed upon number of no-charge restaurant or in-unit meals. Utilities and internet are also included.

For residents who itemize taxes, there is a pre-paid health deduction and all the other tax advantages of home ownership. There is a small monthly fee for double occupancy.

While Rincon del Rio has an Auburn address, it is located about a mile east of Highway 49 in a quiet, rural/natural setting in Nevada County at the Placer line adjacent to the Bear River. Rincon del Rio is just 5 minutes from Auburn Faith Hospital and North Auburn businesses, restaurants, and entertainment.

While in-home care services are an option, professional levels of care are offered in a facility located on-site. If ever needed, Assisted Living is $5,000, and Memory Care is $8,000 monthly. These prices include spacious private bedroom/bath, standard services, and medication management.

 

Wolf Creek Lodge Co-Housing

Wolf Creek Lodge is a multi-story cohousing community for active adults located near a shopping center on the outskirts of Grass Valley, CA. This community is fee-simple; rental opportunities are rare.

At Wolf Creek Lodge there are small one-bedroom homes, larger one-bedroom homes, two bedroom/one bath homes and two bedroom/two bath homes. Home prices (equity model— owners set the sale price when a unit is vacated) range from the $350,000’s to $550,000’s depending on the floor plan and location. The HOA fee for each home ranges from $324 to $390 per month (2018 budget), depending on the size of the home. Add $17 per month if you plan to purchase a covered parking space.

Wolf Creek Lodge offers boxes for mail delivery, a laundry room, an office, storage space, and a multi-purpose room. There are no services offered and community members have responsibilities for group tasks.

Solstice is Independent Living. Services provided: Three meals a day, weekly housekeeping, laundry room, scheduled transportation, utilities, social activities, and an on-site beauty/barber shop. There is a monthly fee of $25 if a resident has a pet.

This facility is located along a side street in a medical use neighborhood (Bed Pan Alley) in north Auburn. It is one block away from the Auburn Faith Hospital.

The monthly fee includes two meals a day served in the dining room with a continental breakfast every morning in the library. The evening meal is lighter fare. This facility is an old historic hotel along Main Street in downtown Grass Valley. Surrounding uses include small retail business and restaurants. All units have kitchenettes.

This is a pet friendly community, although it is located in a downtown setting with no open space or dog park. Cable included. Phone & internet available for additional charge.

The facility is located at the center of a 55 and older single-family home sub-division in northwestern Grass Valley. Surrounding use includes Sierra College, a high school, an office park, single family homes and an assisted living/memory care facility (Cascades of Grass Valley) 3 meals a day. Six levels of care range is an additional $300.00-$2,350 per month.

Nevada City Senior Apartments (60 units) was built in 1999. All apartments come with kitchenettes. The facility is designed to serve seniors on a fixed income below $26,850 a year. Income qualified residents pay 30% of monthly income for rent.

This senior living and care community is located on a hill along a side street in a residential neighborhood in south Auburn. It has 125 independent living units, 20 assisted living units, and 30 skilled nursing beds. All independent and assisted living units have full kitchens.

These two Assisted Living facilities are in the same neighborhood owned & operated by the same entity. The Villa can house 14 residents in 12 units. This facility offers independent living in the Garden Villas (apartments), assisted living, memory care, and respite care. Pets are welcome.

Assisted Living residents reside in The Manor in a variety of apartment styles and sizes. Each has a refreshment kitchenette, large bathroom with walk-in shower, and an emergency call system that offers two-way voice communication with staff.

Independent-Living residents have access to the amenities of The Manor (Assisted Living) including meals served in a central dining room. There is also a beauty shop and spa on site. Rent is month to month.

This rental facility is located along a main thoroughfare in northwestern Grass Valley between a retail shopping and a residential neighborhood with apartments and a large trailer park. With the exception of Memory Care, the monthly rates do not include care services, which are offered on an a-la-carte basis to fit each resident’s specific needs.

The facility offers independent living, assisted living, respite care, and memory care. Brunswick Village is pet friendly with an initial $1,000 deposit. Medication management is available for additional charges ranging from $375 – $475.
